Proposal Summary
Moundridge Arts Council (MAC) is embarking on a public art beautification campaign. In this first planned installation, the MAC will partner with Swiss Mennonite Culture and Historical Association (SMCHA ) commemorating their sesquicentennial celebration of migration to Moundridge, Kansas. The art installation will include iconography depicting the influence of the Mennonite settlers to central Kansas. The area will include benches for viewing as well as a plaque providing historical context.
Community Impact & Accomplishments To-Date
The easy answer would be to observe people admiring and visiting the installation. However greater impact will be found in pride of place, learning more about local history, and continuing to contribute to beautification efforts. These impacts will be felt in later generations.
We will be able to gauge impact by increase in tourism, visitation and volunteering with the museum and SMCHA, and continued support of expanded beautification and public art efforts.
Why do you think this project is necessary?
As identified in the Mastermind McPherson County survey, citizens of Moundridge have set beatification as a priority. We believe that art beautifies and enriches the lives of all residents. This sculpture installation will be the first of several that will enrich and beautify all corners of town. Moundridge is such a unique town with a rich history of innovation, resilience, and community connectiveness. We wish to honor this tradition as Moundridge moves into the future. Beautifying through art builds interest in local history, pays homage to forbearers, and creates town pride moving forward. As well as beautification, art provides residents and visitors a visual of the town’s history, This is the first of a four-part project which, when complete, will celebrate the religious, Native, industrial and agricultural history of Moundridge.
