Fairmount String Quartet at Sandzén
Description
The Fairmount Quartet, comprised of Timothy Jones and Daniel Carrasco on violins, Ruben Balboa on viola, and Leonid Shukaev on cello, will perform Antonín Dvorak’s celebrated American quartet (Op. 96), written in Spillville, Iowa in 1893, as well as Joseph Haydn’s Rider Quartet (Op. 74 No. 3), and the Nocturne from Alexander Borodin’s Quartet No. 2 at the Sandzen Gallery on Sunday, April 12 at 2:00pm.
Dr. Timothy Jones is an artist, teacher, and performer with roots in Kansas and branches across the Americas. He currently serves as Associate Concertmaster of the Wichita Symphony Orchestra and Assistant Professor of Violin at Wichita State University. He holds degrees in music education and violin performance, having received his doctorate in performance at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil. As a violinist, Jones has performed as soloist, concertmaster, and chamber musician in North and South America.
Daniel Carrasco developed a passion for classical music at an early age. He began studying violin in the Wichita Public School system and performed throughout high school, participating in the Wichita Youth Symphony Orchestra. Throughout the years he also studied viola, cello, piano, and clarinet. Life also took Daniel in a different direction, leading him to earn a degree in accounting and a career with Reddi Industries in Wichita. In 2024, Carrasco’s passion for music performance was reignited and he once again began studying and playing violin while still working full-time.
Dr. Ruben Balboa is a violist and educator. He serves as Assistant Professor of Viola/Violin and String Music Education at Wichita State University. He has been recognized by the American Viola Society as both an emerging artist and emerging teacher. As a performer, Balboa is active as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral artist, with appearances across the country. He has performed with orchestras including the Austin Symphony and Wichita Symphony Orchestra. His work also includes crossover collaborations with artists such as Josh Groban and Sarah Brightman, and he frequently performs with his wife, soprano Dr. Samantha Balboa.
Dr. Leonid Shukaev is a cellist who belongs to the great Russian cello tradition. As a student of the St. Petersburg Conservatory, he earned both doctorate and master’s degrees. Shukaev is a tenured associate professor of cello and chamber music coach at the Wichita State University School of Music. He is also principal cellist of the Wichita Symphony Orchestra and the Wichita Grand Opera Orchestra and a founding member of the Orfeo Trio and the Orfeo Duo.
