Proposal Summary

Background: The McPherson Industrial Development Company, MIDC, is the lead industrial economic development agent for the city of McPherson and the surrounding County. In the last 7 years we have facilitated $700,000,000 in new capital investment projects for McPherson County. These projects have created over 1,000 jobs.
Issue: Due to our success, we are now limited on our availability of shovel-ready property. In 2020, we sold some of our last two prime industrial properties. We are left with lots that need significant infrastructure upgrades and others that are too small for the leads we are receiving.
Solution: MIDC has a promising proposal from a leading international site consultant agency. This proposal includes a 1.5-day site visit and workshop with our Board to familiarize the consultants with our industrial portfolio of properties. During this visit, the consultants will also meet with stakeholders to discuss and provide counsel on McPherson’s economic development strategy.

Community Impact & Accomplishments To-Date

Manufacturing plays a material role in McPherson and the surrounding McPherson County. No other sector does more to generate broad-scale economic growth and, ultimately, higher living standards than manufacturing. One way to measure this is through multipliers, which are used to quantify the indirect and induced impact of activity in an industry; they help us identify which industries play the most significant role in our economy. The manufacturing industry has a multiplier of at least 9.0. This means that, on average, the creation of one manufacturing job will result in at least nine total jobs in the economy. Also, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, every dollar spent in manufacturing generates $1.48 in economic activity, more than any other significant economic sector. A successful mastermind grant application is the first step in ensuring MIDC has what it needs to continue to support existing manufacturers and attract new ones. The grant would cover the consultant fees to ensure McPherson has the correct information from a world leader in site selection to keep McPherson thriving. If the consultant’s advice is followed as MIDC intends, we expect to see increased proposal requests, site visits, and possible industrial project wins, all of which can be tracked. This will not only boost the local economy but also create more job opportunities and improve the overall quality of life in McPherson.

Why do you think this project is necessary?

McPherson’s manufacturers provide the region’s residents with job opportunities at a competitive wage. 35% of McPherson’s workforce comes in from outside of McPherson County. McPherson’s ability to attract and retain manufacturers would be thwarted without a portfolio of shovel-ready industrial properties in today’s competitive economic development climate. Tying in with the issue of limited shovel-ready site options, we are also seeing much larger projects in terms of land requirements and utilities. If McPherson wants to be competitive on these projects, serious discussions need to take place regarding how to address the required utility infrastructure upgrades to existing sites. The consultants we seek to hire possess the expertise to guide us on what to do with our industrial properties and on what next steps to take to be competitive on these next-generation projects; which which will create more high paying job opportunities for McPherson, MP County and the entire region.
