Proposal Summary
The Inman Rec. Commission is working to provide after school care for Kindergarten to 6th grade from 3:30-6pm. Childcare is a need throughout every community, and is a need in Inman as there are only two certified daycares. These funds will give us start up funds for general monthly budget as well as funding for supplies, technology, and allow us to train our director of the program prior to the programs first day. This will enable us to provide a program for our kids with excellent care, home work help, arts and crafts, STEM programming, and recreational activities. Our mission is to provide a program that will help our youth excel as well as to be a program parents and children want to be a part of.
Community Impact & Accomplishments To-Date
There will be 2 primary metrics:
Metric 1, the state will allow “x” amount of kids into the program because of current floor space. The first metric will be if we can fill all the spots that we are allowed. If all the spots are filled, that will indicate that parents find value in the program and are comfortable with the price.
Metric 2, might be a more powerful metric. That is how many requests we get after all spots are taken. How many families are still requesting a spot? This will help show the buy in from the community and the desire to have the program in the community.
Measuring the impact on the micro level there are many things that can be tracked with the children. Reading being a cornerstone of education makes AR points a definite potential metric. Comparing the average accumulated AR points from students in the afterschool program versus the general school population.
We can measure the number of STEM modules the students get through on the B&GC software.
There are other metrics that are going to be developed as we continue to develop the plan through the summer, but these are some of the larger ones.
Why do you think this project is necessary?
In January 2023, there were 57,000 less childcare workers then in February of 2020 in the United States and the number continues to grow. Inman currently has only 2 licensed daycares exhibiting a national trend on a local level. Inman is unable to support 5% of the childcare needs for ages 0-12. Furthermore, Inman sets between 4 larger cities (Hutchinson, McPherson, Wichita, Salina) drawing many parents outside of the city limits for their work. The lack of day care: 1. Impacts many families ability to work and have a safe environment for their children for after school hours. 2. It impacts many of the employers who are adjusting work schedules to accommodate their employees’ childcare needs. 3. It also makes decisions difficult for either parent when one or the other would like to work outside the home but daycare or after school care is a limiting factor.
