Proposal Summary
The purpose of this project is to provide the public access to key features within Swensson Park, the city’s central-most and well-loved park. There are currently no sidewalks to these features from the street, which can make it challenging for our patrons with physical challenges and those with strollers to access the park’s features. These pathways would provide easy access and achieve ADA compliance. We also believe it is necessary to enable people to engage in their park system and reap the benefits of being outdoors.
Community Impact & Accomplishments To-Date
The community impact could be measured by the number of visitors that we attract to our community and parks. There are many events that are held in Swensson Park that attract many visitors from around the State and beyond. Our annual car show has attendance of around 100 classic cars from all across the state. We also attract several hundred spectators to the annual Broadway RFD Playbill. Events like Midsummer’s, Old Fashioned Fourth, and Hyllningsfest also draw hundreds (and up to thousands) of visitors to the community. The events held in the park allow people to see and use the park and all of its features. By installing pathways, more people will want to look around and explore the park, thus increasing the awareness of what a great place this is. This should further increase the traffic to our county.
Why do you think this project is necessary?
Installation of the sidewalks would allow the public to access these important community features easily and safely. Not only would it solve the issues of safety and not being ADA compliant, but it would add beauty and function to Swensson Park. The park contains a large, community-built playground; a plaza that celebrates 150 years of Lindsborg’s foundation and a beautiful garden and statue that memorializes Alma Swensson, an important female leader instrumental to our community’s history, yet there is not a connection of solid pathways to access them from each other or from the street. The addition of these sidewalks would benefit all those who want to enjoy these awesome and beautiful features within the park and create a greater sense of community.
