Proposal Summary

It’s well-known that access to reproductive health has long been a challenge, and McPherson County is no execption. The Reproductive Freedom: Expanding Access to Long-Acting Reversible Contraception project aims to bridge the gap by providing access to Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC), which is often referred to as hormonal implants or intrauterine devices (IUD). Funding will support this project by providing income-based reduced or free access to LARC, including the consultation, insertion and removal visit fees and device cost.

Community Impact & Accomplishments To-Date

This project will be measured by the number of patients that seek LARC with McPherson County Health Department and follow through with the consultation and insertion/removal of a device at any of the contracted provider locations. We plan to request feedback from the patients about how they found out about the project, how their appointment(s) with the contracted providers/clinics went, and if they have any constructive feedback to help us better the process and project.

Why do you think this project is necessary?

This project addresses the community need for affordable access to birth control options. Through our Title X Family Planning grant, we can provide birth control options like the pill, shot, ring and patch. However, because we don’t employ a medical doctor on site, we’re unable to offer LARC like the IUD or implant. These two methods are often requested by those who seek long-term but not permanent pregnancy prevention. LARC is effective for 3 to 8 years, whereas other birth control methods may only be effective on a daily, monthly or quarterly basis as long as the individual stays on top of their prescription. We’ve contracted with local medical doctors that will perform the consultation, insertion and removal of these devices, which we anticipate will also bridge the gap for those who need to establish primary medical care.
